Kazakhstan: A Big Fruit Store Cellar Completed in Shymkent

Construction of a fruit store cellar was completed in Shymkent, which will provide agricultural producers in Southern Kazakhstan, Zhambyl and Kyzylorda Oblasts with an opportunity to sell fruit and vegetables irrespective of the season.
“The fruit store cellar consisting of four blocks features advanced technologies to allow long-term storage of fruit and vegetables, and to date is the only one in Kazakhstan,” says Klara Serikbayeva, Press Secretary of Ontustik Social Enterprise Corporation (SPK Ontustik).

According to her, once placed in the cellar, fruit and vegetables will stay fresh for half a year. “Low temperature, optimum moisture content and forced ventilation will prevent early deterioration of agricultural produce and foreign odours,” Serikbayeva said.

Product suppliers will include, first of all, service centres in Southern Kazakhstan, Zhambyl and Kyzylorda Oblasts, as well as suppliers from the CIS and foreign countries. Part from that, negotiations are now being held with foreign producers on supplies of fruit and vegetables, says Bakhytbek Tanaguzov, Director of Sanzhar Fruit’s LLP, a company which was implementing the project on the fruit store cellar construction jointly with SPK Ontustik.

“The goal of this facility is to provide our agricultural producers with an opportunity to market fruit and vegetables in Shymkent and Southern Kazakhstan Oblast, irrespective of the season, and later on, distribute their products in other regions of Kazakhstan or export to other countries,” Tanaguzov says.

The total area of refrigeration chambers in the fruit store cellar is 1,440 square metres to keep 3,000 to 5,000 tons of products, including 800 tons of meat, and 2,200 tons of vegetables and fruit.

Most chambers are medium-temperature, with a temperature range -2 to 5 degrees. There are also low-temperature chambers with a temperature of -28 degrees.

Unlike regular refrigerators, the chambers do not need any defrosting or ice cleaning. This will be done automatically. Each chamber can work in an automatic mode of cooling, ventilation or humidification.

“Commissioning of a modern fruit store cellar in Shymkent which meets international standards will enhance development of fruit and vegetable growing and processing facilities in southern regions of the country,” says Kanat Andakulov, Chief Manager of SPK Ontustik, and supervisor of the project.

SPK Ontustik funded equipment purchase. Sanzhar Fruit’s provided a land plot and funded the construction. The total project value is 376,889,000 tenge, including 185,850,000 tenge invested by SPK Ontustik, said the SPK Ontustik press service.
