Kazakhstan: Bananas on Market Counters Cost Three Times As Much, While Oranges and Cucumbers, 2.5 Times More Than on the National Border

In Kazakhstan, the ratio between import and retail prices did not change in January 2010.
We still see outrageous discrepancies between wholesale import prices and retail prices.

Here, the lead is taken by imported vegetables and fruit not grown in Kazakhstan such as bananas, lemons and oranges, as well as those that cannot be kept fresh for a long time and grown in limited quantities in greenhouses. They include cucumbers and tomatoes. The market obviously lacks the most demanded fruit, apples. Their import price is 3.1 times lower than the retail price.

With regards to other products, the highest retail markups are featured by smoked fish (2.8 times) and rice (2.4 times).

A price range like this has for a long time vexed the population and officials. As a reminder, the Ministry of Industry recently came up with an idea to impose limits on retail prices by force – not more than twofold; however, their undertaking failed to gain support as it ran counter to the free market principles. Moreover, this idea sparked growth of deficit and more expensive products.
