The Customs Committee of the Ministry of Finance published data on the actual price of imported fruit, vegetables and other foodstuff. Local resellers’ markup goes as high as three hundred per cent!
For instance, right after crossing the Kazakhstani border, a kilo of potatoes cost no more than 30 tenge, although within the country, they are marketed at 70 tenge per kilo at least. There is approximately the same price difference for other vegetable and fruit. Dealers gain most profit reselling tomatoes, bananas and oranges, trebling the price. The markup on carrots is the smallest one – almost the double price. These data were recorded by Kazakhstan’s Customs Control Committee during 23 through 28 April. However, the data were published only after today’s meeting of the government. At the meeting, Karim Masimov reproached ministers, akims and heads of national companies for price rise with regards to food, fuel and lubricants.
Karim Masimov, Prime Minister of Kazakhstan:
“Unfortunately, we see that prices on some foodstuff tend to rise. I believe local authorities and our ministers are somewhat slack now. During the recession, we succeeded in controlling the prices, and managed to find right decisions.”
